22. Silver brooches The first silver ornaments were obtained in trade but by the early 1800's the Great Lakes tribes had acquired the tools, skills and materials to produce their own. The metal is not real silver but an alloy of zinc, copper and nickel that was known as "German silver." From the beginning silver work was a specialized skill and few Meskwaki practiced the art form.
