Most of the first bones Bob and Sonia Athen found exposed in the bed of the West Tarkio Creek in 2001 were stained black wherever they peeked out of the clay. This piece of vertebra for example was half buried, with only the dark tip exposed. We were curious about what caused the staining and decided to make a thin-section of the bone to see how far inside the "stain" extended.
