Preparing a fossil sample
Volunteer Luan Heywood examining a bone specimen. Under the microscope the dense bone appears well-preserved with a definite pattern of concentric layers (lamellae) around the openings to the interior (Haversian canals) which held the blood and lymph vessels and nerves that sustained the bone in life.
