MNH volunter Mary Horton using the Office of the State Archaeologist (OSA) floatation machine to process sediment from the fossil site. OSA staff-members Dan Horgen and Robin Lillie assist. Light materials like seeds, hidden in the sediment, float to the surface of the water where they are collected and dried for later identification. Test samples like this provide a snapshot of the plants growing around the sloths at the time of death. We'll return to the site in the future and collect a carefully controlled sample and repeat this test.
