Preparing a sloth tooth for stable isotope analysis
Sectioned tooth after polishing. Notice the dome-shape layers pointing upwards towards the biting surface. Alex and Jeff suspect the layers represent seasonal growth lines and plan to sample the stable isotopes of carbon, nitrogen and oxygen in each layer. Shifts in the mix of C and N isotopes will indicate changes in diet. O-isotopes change with external temperatures.
