Our second order of business was to talk about our office
supply drive:
- Alan has talked to his father and is able
to get all of the supplies on our list for around $40.
- Instead of having members pay for a
particular item, everyone agreed to chip in 5 to 6 dollars to
help out with the cost.
- Anah is going to email Alan and tell him
to tell his dad to go ahead and order the supplies.
NOTE: Remember to bring your money to the next meeting!
3.
Our third order of business was to talk about the NCTE
Annual Convention in Nashville:
- We are still waiting to hear about our
funding and should know in the near future. Anah will email
everyone as soon as she hears.
- Also, PLEASE NOTE: students must be
members of the national NCTE organization in order to go to the
conference in Nashville. To become a student member of the
national NCTE organization, go to
www.ncte.org and sign
up for a student membership. The cost is $20 and will allow you
to receive journals and other benefits at reduced prices.
- Important: You must
have your membership number in order to register for the
national conference in Nashville, so when you register WRITE
IT DOWN!
4.
Our fourth order of business was to discuss upcoming
public relations duties:
- Kimberlie has designed flyers for NCTE-SA
and Cognitive Overload and is going to place them in the NCTE-SA
office. When you get a chance, stop in to see the flyers and
leave a note for Kimberlie with some feedback.
- We discussed important buildings in which
to hang the flyers which include: Lindquist, EPB, Main Library,
IMU, various dormitories and coffee shops, North Hall, Adler
Journalism Building, and outside the doors of a few lecture
halls.
- Finally, we discussed visiting English and
Reading Education classes to promote NCTE-SA and will set up a
schedule at a later date.
5.
Our fifth order of business was to discuss Cognitive
Overload:
- Matt is in the process of working through
all of his ideas about Cognitive Overload. At the next meeting,
Matt will bring a list of his questions and a few design ideas
for the website for everyone to give him feedback on.
- We discussed the possibility of adding a
mission statement for Cognitive Overload to the flyers, starting
a Facebook Profile Page to promote the online publication, and
of including a question and answer section about education.
- We will set up a sheet in the office to
jot down ideas if you think of any!
6.
Our sixth order of business was to generate a list of
things we need help with from Bonnie:
- We need Bonnie’s help with making copies
of both the NCTE-SA flyer and the Cognitive Overload flyers when
they are finished
- We need to know from Bonnie what she wants
our help with for the ICTE Convention
- Frank McCourt is coming the first week in
November and Bonnie would like us to help plan for his stay, and
we need some more details on that.
- We would also like her input on the
development of Cognitive Overload.
7.
Other:
- Remember to turn in your biographies for
the website to Anah (anah-malamut@uiowa.edu) if you have not
already done so.
- Members voted to move Tuesday meetings
from 7:00pm to 6:30pm.
- Reminder to Anah: contact someone to start
our listserve and to set up our email account.
- Finally, we are still in the process of
decorating our walls. Please feel free to contribute any poster
having to do with literacy so that we can liven up the place a
little!
The next NCTE-SA meeting will be
Thursday, September 28 @ 4:45 pm in N222 Lindquist
Center. See you then!
