NCTE-SA Meeting Minutes for February 11, 2006

* The Shirley Brice Heath lecture went well, but most of the attendees were professors and doctoral students, so it was more of an educational experience than it was a means of recruiting new members.

* Allyson completed the form for status as an official student organization, and we’ll submit a revised edition of the old NCTE-SA mission so we don’t have to reinvent the wheel.

* Our next “meeting” will be a movie get-together at Tricia’s apartment  (1039 W. Benton #16; see evite for directions).  Please reply to the evite, and notify Anah if you’re interested in carpooling.  We decided to order pizza, and since we don’t have access to our money yet, each member should bring a few dollars to contribute.  Members can also bring pop/soda (whatever you like to call it), M&Ms, chips, or any treat you’d like to share.  We’ll also be making a sign for our office door while we watch Mad Hot Ballroom.

* We have a meeting scheduled for March 23, which is during the CCCC Convention in Chicago.  We decided to keep the meeting date, and there was some interest in going to the convention over the weekend so we don’t have to worry about missing class.  Registration is only $30 for student NCTE members, and Bonnie said we’ll get lots of free stuff.  The only thing we’d need to pay for would be a hotel, transportation, and food.  Bonnie said we may be able to use a university van, so Lindsay will look into that.  Hotel and transportation rates will vary depending on the number of people interested in going, and if we’d like, we could use some money from the NCTE fund (Bonnie said we could get a loan from her, and pay her back once we have access to the group’s funds).   More information to come.

* Alan is putting together of list of classes for us to speak at so we can recruit new members.  The sign-up will be in the office along with a list of points to mention in your “presentation.”  We will begin presenting as soon as the week of February 27th, but Alan will contact the professors and let you know which date and time to go to the class (it may be before or after Spring Break).  Allyson suggested that we also go to the Ed Psych classes, and Anah mentioned that potential new members may be interested in helping us put together Cognitive Overload, which was one of our goals.

* Allyson and Tricia shared book talks, which will soon be available for viewing online.  Tricia has also been playing with the website and would like feedback about a possible color scheme.
