NCTE-SA Meeting Minutes for February 2, 2006

* NCTE-SA will help (i.e. go to the lecture and maybe help serve food/drink) with Shirley Brice Heath’s lecture on Wednesday, February 8 from 4:30 - 6 pm in Jones Commons.  Please be there 15 minutes early.  This will also be a way to recruit new members, so we will have membership forms and calendars available to guests.  Alan is making a poster, and we decided against taking last minute photos to put on the poster.  We’ll do this another time, but we can use them for bulletin boards and PR posters.

* For office hours, we’re still asking Bobbie (in room N259 LC) for the office key, but she and Bonnie are working on a better solution.

* We “elected” officers.

      - Co-chairs are Anah Malamut and Lindsay Smith, and they will also be taking care of Scribe (secretary) duties.

      - Allison Hermann is our Penny-Pincher (treasurer), and she will be collecting membership forms and dues.  We decided that from now on, members will register online with nationals (www.ncte.org) and pay $10 to the Student Affiliate.  This makes money issues less confusing, especially since we don’t exactly have a bank account yet.  (We will once we are officially recognized as a student org again.)  Allison also volunteered to get office supplies for us.

      - Tricia Kramer is our Webmaster, and she would like members to giver her information to include on the website, such as: book reviews, lesson plans, a short autobiography…  (Jaclyn DeRose will help us get access to more web space if we need it.)  We decided against putting evaluations of courses and professors on the website because we didn’t want to offend anyone (especially since our website is linked to the University).  As for submitting stuff for the website, it would be best to give Tricia a saved copy on a disk (rather than emailing it), but we’re still checking into other options.

      - Our Mouthpiece (PR) is Alan Strait.  He is making a poster for the SBH lecture, and he is investigating which classes (e.g. Elementary and Secondary Orientation) we should “present” to for recruiting new members.  Once he has a list of classes, we will sign up to talk to them about NCTE-SA (we can go singly or in pairs).

* We made a calendar with the rest of this semester’s events, and we will have this information available at the SBH lecture to give to potential new members.   We will meet every other Thursday at 5:30, and each time, someone (or two people) will do an informal book talk about any text.  This is our schedule:

February 16, 5:30 pm meeting in Jones Commons, Allyson and Tricia do book talks

March 2, 5:30 pm potluck and screening of Mad Hot Ballroom (location TBA)

March 23, 5:30 pm meeting in Jones Commons, Anna and Jaclyn do book talks

      * I believe this is the week of the CCCC Convention, so we may adjust plans

April 6, 5:30 pm meeting in Jones Commons, Lindsay does a book talk

April 20, 5:30 pm meeting in Jones Commons, Alan does a book talk

April 28 or 30 organize a group to go to lunch/dinner and the Crucible at Hancher

* Alan announced that Shakespeare’s Love’s Labour’s Lost is showing at the Theatre Building February 9-19.  Tickets are $8 for students, and they are two-for-the-price-of-one for the Valentine’s Day performance.
