2006
Thanks to everyone who was
able to make it to the meeting on Tuesday! The next NCTE-SA meeting
will be on Tuesday, September 19th
at 7:00pm, in N222 Lindquist Center.
- Our first
order of business was to talk about book talks at our meetings:
·
Each NCTE-SA meeting will now begin
with a "Snack and Share". One member each week will bring food
to share with the group and he or she will share interesting reading
from fiction, non-fiction, professional and "fun" literature, film,
and art etc.
·
Members have signed up for the
following dates:

o
September 28 - Matt
o
October 3 -
Anah
o
October 12 - Lindsay
o
October 17 - Michelle
o
October 26 - Alan
- Our second
order of business was to talk about having an office supply
drive:
·
Our office is in need of some supplies.
Members decided everyone would donate at least one supply from the
needed list:
-
Stapler
-
Tape
-
Pencil Sharpener
-
Sticky Notes
-
Push Pins
-
A large calendar for the wall
-
A large dry erase board for the wall

A printer (if anyone has a used one they'd
like to donate)
·
Alan is going to talk to his father
about ordering supplies at cost and will send the information to
Anah as soon as he gets it. ·
- Our third
order of business was to talk about the NCTE Annual Convention
in Nashville:
-
· Anah
reported back about the financial meetings she and Alan attended
but we have not yet heard how much we will be given.
-
Members
decided we will determine how funds received from UISG will be
divided once a definite number is given to NCTE-SA. We hope to
have some answers at the next meeting.
-
·
Also, PLEASE
NOTE: students must be members of the national NCTE organization
in order to go to the conference in Nashville. To become
a student member of the national NCTE organization, go to
www.ncte.org and sign up for a student membership. The cost
is $20 and will allow you to receive journals and other benefits
at reduced prices.
-
Important: You must have your membership number in order to
register for the national conference in Nashville, so when you
register WRITE IT DOWN!
4. Our fourth
order of business was to discuss public relations for our
organization:
We want to get the word out about what
a great organization NCTE-SA is! Kimberlie is going to design flyers
to hang around campus to encourage people to join. She will also
come with a plan to the meeting next week for her and her public
relations team on how to better spread the word about NCTE-SA.
- Our fifth
order of business was to discuss Cognitive Overload:
- We are going to
get Cognitive Overload, our online publication, up and
running! Matt Austin (matthew-austin@uiowa.edu)
is the new Editor and will be in charge of receiving
submitted pieces, choosing which pieces to include, and
editing them before they are published
- Students wishing
to submit work for publishing to Cognitive Overload are to
send their pieces in an email to Matt with the subject
heading “Cognitive Overload”
- Kimberlie will
design flyers to promote Cognitive Overload to hang in
buildings on campus. We also would like to make sure to
inform students in the College of Education, Creative
Writing program, and the Nonfiction Writing program about
our publication.
- Also, each
student organization is allowed one mass email to students
at the University of Iowa. We are discussing whether we
should use ours to get the word out about Cognitive
Overload.
- Other
- All members are
going to write a short biography to include in the Member
Bios section of the NCTE-SA website. Email member bios
to: anah-malamut@uiowa.edu.
- Members decided
to move Thursday meetings from 5:00pm to 4:45pm.
- We are still in
the process of decorating our walls. Please feel free to
contribute any poster having to do with literacy so that we
can liven up the place a little!
-
Remember office hours
start next week!
The next NCTE-SA meeting will be Tuesday,
September 19 at 7:00pm in N222 Lindquist Center. See you then!
