28,
2006
IMPORTANT NOTE: If you need to
miss your office hours, please send out an email to all members to
inform them and, if you are able, place a note on the door to the
office.
1.
Our first order of business was book talks:
·
Matt captivated us with his book talk on the book Stiff
by Mary Roach.
·
Future book talks:
-
October 3 - Anah
-
October 12 - Lindsay
-
October 17 - Michelle
-
October 26 - Alan
2.
Our second order of business was public relations:
·
Kimberlie is in the process of compiling a list of English
and Reading Education classes for us to visit and plug NCTE-SA. She
will either bring the list to the next meeting or will post it in
the office. Members may sign up for any classes that they wish to
go and talk to.
·
Kimberlie is also putting the finishing touches on the flyers
promoting NCTE-SA and will begin to make copies (may need help from
Bonnie).
·
We will start the process of hanging flyers around campus in
the next two weeks.
·
Michelle is going to work on setting up Facebook and My Space
profiles to promote NCTE-SA.
·
Finally, Kimberlie is going to work on updating our bulletin
boards around the Lindquist Center and will welcome any help!
3.
Our third order of business was to discuss Cognitive
Overload:
·
We are in the process of getting our first issue ready for
publication. We decided we will include in the first issue:
---An Editorial describing what Cognitive
Overload is.
---A feature section with the theme of
rebirth/regeneration.
---An open section to include any other
pieces submitted and approved by Matt
·
We also discussed including advertising from local
businesses, a plug for NCTE, an archives section, and an interactive
poll. We will wait to include these additions until after the
first issue of Cognitive Overload comes out.
·
We are going to decide how many pieces to include after we
see what kind of response we get after the first few issues.
·
Anah is going to work on a web design.
·
We decided we will keep paper archives of all the issues for
our records and we will include a mission statement on the opening
page.
* For both the Cognitive Overload flyer and NCTE-SA flyer, Scott
will email the processes of hanging flyers up around campus to
Kimberlie so she can decide where to take them.
4.
Our fourth order of business was to discuss our office
supply drive:
·
Alan will try to pick up the supplies from his father on
Saturday, and will let members know how much we owe after he pays
for the supplies.
·
Also, we are planning to paint our office! Michelle and
Cassie will bring color samples to our next meeting for us to vote
on.
5.
Our fifth order of business was our Treasurer report:
·
Our account in the IMU currently has around $630 in it to use
as we wish. Any money we raise in the future will go into this
account.
·
When members are at office hours, please keep accurate
receipts in the lock box in the office.
·
Scott is going to work out a system for moving dues from the
lock box over to our account.
6.
Our sixth order of business was to discuss the NCTE Annual
Convention in Nashville:
·
We have received $2050.00 to be used on travel, lodging, and
registration fees to the conference.
·
We will pay everything in advance with a credit card to be
checked out of the IMU. If other expenses arise during the trip, we
will be reimbursed later.
·
Scott and Anah are looking into flight and hotel packages
from Moline to Nashville and will let everyone know as soon as
possible.
·
Also, PLEASE NOTE: students must be members of the national
NCTE organization in order to go to the conference in Nashville. To
become a student member of the national NCTE organization, go to
www.ncte.org and sign up
for a student membership. The cost is $20 and will allow you to
receive journals and other benefits at reduced prices.
o
Important:
You must have your membership number in order to register for the
national conference in Nashville, so when you register WRITE IT
DOWN!
7.
