All animals that live among us seem to have served a purpose in the lives of the people who live in Iowa. In an earlier era, our farm animals were not only beloved pets but served as very necessary contributors to the farm communities. They not only worked in the field during the planting and harvest seasons but assisted in transportation. They were lovingly taken care of and had their own names. We hear of Star, Daisy, Pete, and many other names chosen by the farmer. The photo shows a farmer and his team as they pulled a wooden drag along a country road. When rain caused muddy roads, vehicles made deep ruts as they drove through the road. Here we see a farmer with his teams of horses hitched to a wooden drag, which filled the ruts and smoothed the road. Owners loved their horses and after doing hard work, they took them to the watering trough for a drink before going into the barn for their feed of corn, oats, and hay. They were usually turned out into a small pasture for the night to rest and grazing on green grass.
