Appointments and Funding for Individual Scholars

Faculty and staff in all disciplines and academic institutions as well as independent scholars are eligible for semester or summer appointments.  UI faculty at the Center are eligible for various research allowances.  Apply a few months in advance of the desired semester.

Obermann Graduate Institute on Engagement and the Academy

Up to fifteen graduate students will be competitively selected and will receive stipend awards and titles of Obermann Graduate Fellow. The Institute is open to students in all UI departments. The five-day Institute runs mid January during the interim.

Interdisciplinary Research Grants for Collaborative Projects ($6,000 per IDRG collaborator)

University of Iowa faculty or staff researchers working with one another or with visiting researchers may propose 4-week summer interdisciplinary research projects at the Center.  3-4 project awards.

Annual Humanities Symposium ($15,000)

University of Iowa scholars in all departments may to apply to design and direct the seminar.

Annual Summer Research Seminar ($40,000)

The summer seminar (1-3 weeks) gathers 8-12 researchers world-wide to develop essays for a volume.  Two proposal steps: (1) applications to design and direct the seminar  (2) applications to prepare an article and participate in that summer's designated seminar.

Cmiel Research Semester (was Interdisciplinary Research Semester) ($75,000)

4-6 University of Iowa scholars work on individual projects organized around an important topic.  One course reduction and $1500 research allowance plus funds for visiting speakers. Design and direct the 2008-2009 Semester (UI tenured faculty only).

Stanley International Programs - Obermann Center Research Fellowships ($3,000 each)

University of Iowa faculty in residence at the Obermann Center are eligible for support of research of an international nature.  Two awards each semester.  Deadline:  at the beginning of each semester.

Discretionary Funding

The Obermann Center sponsors or co-sponsors symposia, projects, and planning meetings that bring together University of Iowa faculty meeting with one another or with visiting researchers, professionals, and decision-makers.  Contact Jay Semel.

External Grants

The Obermann Center assists researchers who are applying for external grants or who need a site for funded projects. The Center provides funds to bring together UI and visiting researchers to develop proposals, has been written into applications as an institutional resource, and has provided cost-sharing.  Contact Jay Semel.
