Obermann Center for Advanced Studies The University of Iowa

Request for proposals from
UI Faculty currently in residence at the Obermann Center

Stanley-UI Foundation Support Organization International Programs-Obermann
Research Fellowships

Deadline: Tuesday October 6, 2009

Applications are invited for a unique fellowship offered to UI faculty members who are scholars in residence at the Obermann Center for Advanced Studies and engaged in research with an international emphasis.

Thanks to the generous support of the Stanley-UI Foundation Support Organization and the C. Esco and Avalon L. Obermann Endowment, the University of Iowa International Programs (IP) and the Obermann Center for Advanced Studies (OCAS) are happy to invite proposals for a Stanley International Programs-Obermann Center Research Fellowship.

The award provides $3000 to support the proposed research; the funds may be used at the Scholar’s discretion.  One fellowship will be awarded this semester. The research funds will be available immediately and will be available until September 1, 2010.

This fellowship is awarded competitively to UI faculty who are scholars in residence at the Obermann Center whose research this semester focuses on international issues.

The IP-OCAS Fellow will have the opportunity to share her or his research. The goal of the program is two-fold.  We wish to bring international perspectives to the scholarly community at the Obermann Center and therefore we especially seek applicants who have frequent interchange with their Center colleagues. We wish to integrate Obermann Scholars into the IP community and so the award recipient will be asked to speak at one of IP’s “International Mondays.”

Eligibility:

Applicants must be tenured or tenure-track University of Iowa faculty members who have an appointment at the Obermann Center during fall 2009. Preference may be given to UI faculty members on UI developmental or other research assignments or external grants that allow a faculty member to devote substantial time to research and scholarship. Preference will be given to those who have not held this award in the past and will not be awarded to the same recipient within a five-year span.  Obermann Scholars who submitted in the past but did not receive an award are eligible to submit for this competition and are most welcome to do so.

Selection Process:

A faculty review panel will evaluate the proposals. Review of applications will be based on the following criteria:

Last semester, the fellowship was awarded for Joy Hayes’s work on Community Radio and Media Reform in Mexico.

Application Instructions:

Applicants should submit the following:

  1. a one-page narrative summary, which
    • describes your current project at the Obermann Center and its international nature,
    • identifies any award that is already supporting the project (e.g., Career Development Award, Faculty Scholar Award, NEH Fellowship, etc.), and
