Applications are invited for a unique fellowship offered to scholars in residence at the Obermann Center for Advanced Studies who are engaged in research on topics with an international emphasis.
Thanks to the generous support of the Stanley-UI Foundation Support Organization and the C. Esco and Avalon L. Obermann Endowment, the University of Iowa International Programs (IP) and the Obermann Center for Advanced Studies (OCAS) are happy to announce the Stanley International Programs-Obermann Center Research Fellowships.
These fellowships will be awarded competitively to scholars in residence at the Obermann Center whose research focuses on international issues. While successful applicants must be in residence to apply and will be named as Fellows during their residency, the funds will be available for a 12 month period, starting at the end of the residency. The goal is to help scholars continue the momentum on the work they have accomplished during their residency at the Obermann Center.
The award provides $3000 for travel and other forms of support directly tied to a scholar’s international research. As many as four fellows will be appointed annually (up to two in the fall semester and up to two in the spring semester). The deadline is November 12, 2007 for Obermann Scholars in residence in the fall. The research funds will be available effective December 15 and will be available for up to twelve months after the award date.
Each IP-OCAS Fellow will have the opportunity to share her or his research. One of the goals of this award is to bring international perspectives to the scholarly community at the Obermann Center for Advanced Studies. Therefore, each Fellow will describe her or his project to fellow Obermann Scholars at an informal “Coffee Talk” session. In addition, this year’s fall and spring recipients will gather to share their research as members of a panel, which will convene in the IP Commons next fall. The panel will be co-hosted by International Programs and the Obermann Center.
Applicants must be University of Iowa faculty who have an appointment at the Obermann Center during the semester of their application. Preference may be given to UI faculty members on UI developmental or other research assignments or external grants that allow a faculty member to devote substantial time to research and scholarship. We regret that summer OCAS Scholars are not eligible for these awards.

Review of applications will be based on the following criteria:
A selection committee consisting of the International Programs Associate Dean, a member of the OCAS Advisory Committee, and a previous recipient of the award, in consultation with the International Programs Director of the Grants Office and the Director of the Obermann Center, will select the award winners
Preference will be given to those who have not held this award in the past and will not be awarded to the same recipient within a five-year span.
