Cariology Research

Research on dental caries disease explores factors responsible for the destruction of tooth enamel and methods for prevention.  Changes in the demographic structure of our society and the number of individuals who retain their teeth into old age has increased the importance of studying lesions that occur on root surfaces exposed by receding gingival tissue.

Research continues on the use of fluoride to prevent lesion development or to remineralize existing lesions as well as the use of fluoride restorative materials.

Past research has included:

  • Evaluation of dentifrice components in situ;
  • Intra-oral dentifrice evaluation;
  • In situ evaluation of fluoride containing dentifrices; and
  • In situ evaluation of plaque removal from interproximal enamel by two different toothbrushes.
