Communication

  • obtain contact information for your landlord/property manager before signing the lease and keep it handy

  • open a line of communication early

  • try to communicate as much as possible in writing, keeping copies for yourself

Procedures

  • if you need something repaired/replaced/cleaned, follow procedures according to the Iowa Code.  This information is available on the Tenant Landlord Association website

  • do not assume that fixing something yourself is the right answer.  Refer to your lease if you are unsure

  • understand leasing terms for your responsibilities as a tenant

Pets/Smoking

  • if you are keeping illegal pets or are smoking illegally in your apartment, your landlord may take action against you

  • your landlord is an agent of the leasing agreement.  Any violations of that lease are enforceable by him/her.

  • understand and respect the terms of your lease for a healthy relationship with your landlord
