Old Capitol Classroom: Student Guide
About the site Each year 40,000 people visit Old Capitol. Unfortunately, school children in the western two-thirds of Iowa rarely, if ever, get the chance to visit the museum. It is our hope that through the on-line tour, history and classroom sections of this site we can convey some of the richness of Old Capitol to those of you who do not have the opportunity for a school-sponsored field trip. It is also our hope that this site can inspire teachers and students to come to Iowa City to see Old Capitol "up close and personal." Educational Goals

Classroom Approaches This web site can be used in a variety of ways, depending upon your preferences, and whether or not you are visiting as part of your class work.
If you are visiting with your class, please follow your teacher's suggestions.
If you are visiting on your own choose your favorite way to visit Old Capitol on-line:
- Explore the site any way you would like. Make up your own goals as you go.
- If you would like more structure, try this progression:

- Old Cap Classroom
- Work with a friend. A little competition and two brains can make it more interesting.
- Look at the activities first. No, it's not cheating! It can help organize and focus your thoughts so you get more out of the tour and history sections.
If you don't know which activity to do first try these suggestions:
- Tour Quiz is "just the facts," an easy enough place to start.
- Chauncey's Swan Song is for people who like to write and imagine themselves in another time and place. Make sure you have at least gone through the History section for other information about Chauncey Swan.
