Old Capitol Volunteer Program

Our program offers a volunteer the opportunity to stimulate personal growth by acquiring more knowledge about Iowa’s heritage; to educate, interpret, and share this knowledge with visitors; to meet new people; and to develop new skills. Guides welcome visitors; conduct tours. Tour types vary according to age group, challenging the guide to present tour information for multiple audiences.

Guides must interpret the history of Iowa and The University as it pertains to the building and provide security for our collections. Other volunteers staff the museum shop. Old Capitol is looking for people with a special interest in Iowa and its history, leadership abilities, and excellent communication skills. In addition, volunteers must be reliable and prompt, with a professional attitude and appearance.
