Welcome to Online@Iowa!
Electronic tools such as websites, course management systems, and databases have become a large part of our lives. This is true of life at the University of Iowa, too. Many instructors will expect you to use electronic resources at Iowa and be familiar with the concepts of avoiding plagiarism and copyright from the first day of classes. Knowing how to use the digital tools available at the University will enrich your student experience and assist with your academic success. This course will help you develop your skills for staying in touch, researching, registering for classes, and reviewing your grades – among other activities – all from your own computer screen. At the same time, you will learn about habits and principles that will help protect your computer’s security, avoid plagiarism, and understand copyright.
Please review the information below carefully before logging in.
| Before You Log In: |
- Make sure Flash Player 8 (or above) is installed on your computer. You can check by attempting to open the Navigating the Tutorials tutorial. Earlier versions of Flash Player won't open it. If this tutorial opens, take a minute or two to work through it. If you cannot see the tutorial, you must point your browser to www.adobe.com and download and install the most recent version of Flash Player. If you are still unable to view the tutorial call the Help Desk at: 319.384.HELP (4357)
You'll find downloading instructions in the User Guide (see step 3, below).
- Once the course begins, check your University of Iowa e-mail DAILY for course information and updates. Important information regarding this course (and many courses at the University of Iowa) will be communicated to you via e-mail. You are expected to check your e-mail daily and respond to any instructions promptly (i.e., within 24-hours). Do not forward your University of Iowa e-mail to another e-mail service, such as Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo Mail, or AOL. Forwarded e-mails are often held for up to several days before they are delivered. Thus, using forwarding risks missing important time-sensitive information possibly leading to failing the course. You can check your University of Iowa e-mail from any computer with a Web browser at http://email.uiowa.edu (as noted in the Hawkmail tutorial in this course).
- Review the Online@Iowa User Guide. This handy reference includes technical requiresments and accessibility options, as well as instructions for downloading Flash Player 8, navigating the tutorial, taking quizzes, and troubleshooting.
- Make sure you have one of the following browsers (these work with ICON): Windows: Internet Explorer 6.0 (IE 7 works with some exceptions), Netscape 7.2 or Mozilla 1.3 - 1.7.x Mac: Netscape 7.2, Mozilla 1.3-1.7 (OSX). Linux: Mozilla 1.3 - 1.7.
Now you're ready to log in to ICON and start learning. Enjoy!
