We are pleased to announce the inaugural University of Iowa Orchestra Invitational at The University of Iowa School of Music Friday and Saturday, March 7 & 8, 2008. The Invitational is designed to provide a unique performance and educational opportunity for your orchestra. Each orchestra will perform and receive written critiques and post-performance clinics from esteemed guest conductors, including Henry Charles Smith (Minnesota Orchestra) and Timothy Hankewich (Music Director, Cedar Rapids Symphony). Additional master classes with the renowned University of Iowa instrumental faculty conclude the festival experience.
Each orchestra will perform up to twenty minutes of music followed by a forty-minute clinic. Both will be DVD and CD recorded. Students will have the opportunity to attend hour-long master classes with University Professors on their respective instrument. Free tours of the campus will run throughout
The gala opening of the Invitational will occur Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. featuring a concert performance of The University of Iowa Philharmonia Orchestra in Clapp Recital Hall with a post-concert reception in the lobby for all invited orchestras.
The cost of the festival is $100 per ensemble. Please return a completed application and a $25 deposit as soon as possible. Notification of acceptance and assigned performance/clinic times will be sent following receipt of application. Lunch and dinner on Saturday will be provided by The University of Iowa Orchestras.
Over the years, The University has hosted numerous orchestras and sponsored clinics with outstanding educational and performance results. An orchestra director from Missouri recently commented, “I have never seen my students so engaged and attentive . . . this has been our most meaningful and educational trip. Thank you for inspiring the lives of our students and myself.” We assure each ensemble will have a positive and rewarding experience and enjoy the opportunity to interact and support other premiere high school and youth orchestras from the Midwest.
The weekend will also include an opportunity for students interested in furthering their music education to audition for a University of Iowa Music Scholarship on Saturday afternoon.
