Description: Using images of Ellison Orr documents and artifacts, many
from the Orr
Collection at Effigy Mounds National Monument, Professor Betts will
illustrate Ellison
Orr’s work in archaeology. Orr’s efforts epitomize many
of the central characteristics of
Iowa Archaeology. A native of northeast Iowa, Orr turned an avocational
interest in
Iowa’s past into a full-time passion dedicated to understanding
and preserving that past.
More than a half-century after his death, archaeologists and the general
public continue to
reap the rewards of his efforts. Most of the Ellison Orr collection
is kept in storage for
preservation purposes. Effigy Mounds will place a selection of original
documents and
artifacts from the collection on temporary display for this program.

Description: The DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge is home to a premier
archaeological
collection of 200,000 artifacts excavated from the buried hull of the
Steamboat Bertrand.
The Visitor Center provides an introduction to the refuge, exhibits
the Bertrand
Collection, and contains interpretive displays on the historical development
of the
Missouri River Basin, the ecological impacts of that development, and
the natural history
of the area. The center also contains a theater and exhibition galleries.
A state-of-the-art,
collection storage area protects the cargo of the boat. Visitors may
view this area through
a glass wall, 38 feet in length.

mound mappers

high-tech methods have detected hidden features and discovered exciting
new facts about
old artifacts. Large excavations have revealed ancient settlements that

centuries. Much remains to be discovered as long as the important sites
are preserved for
