OSA Staff 2007

The University of Iowa Office of the State Archaeologist (OSA) is a research unit reporting to the Office of the Vice President for Research. The mission of the OSA, as designed by Iowa statute, is to discover, disseminate, and preserve knowledge of Iowa prehistory and history. The OSA collaborates with many University departments and programs, particularly the Anthropology and Geosciences departments, the Museum of Natural History, and research units such as the University Press. The OSA regularly engages in consultation and cooperative efforts with many local, county, state, and federal agencies as well as with the numerous American Indian nations with an interest in Iowa.

OSA conducts archaeological research, education, and service throughout Iowa and the surrounding region. Research activities include grant- and contract-supported field and laboratory studies, the discovery and protection of ancient cemeteries and burials, and the development of new methods and technologies for archaeological research. Our educational activities focus on public involvement in archaeology through means such as Iowa Archaeology Month, teacher workshops, school and conservation center programs, and support of the Iowa Archeological Society and Iowa Chapter of the Archaeological Institute of America. We serve the people of Iowa in these and other ways, such as maintaining the Iowa Archaeological Site File and the State Archaeological Repository, as well as related photographs, written records, and other research material in the OSA archives. OSA publications include both technical and popular texts on Iowa archaeology.

Please contact the appropriate OSA staff member if you seek further information on Iowa archaeology or one of the OSA programs and activities. On the Internet, visit the OSA at http://www.uiowa.edu/~osa or contact the OSA by e-mail at OSA@uiowa.edu.
