Archeological sites within the Rathbun Reservoir area of south-central Iowa include conical burial mounds situated on ridge crests adjacent to the Chariton River and campsites located along the bottomlands. The simple burial mounds are culturally linked to the Hopewellian pattern as it is expressed in northwestern Illinois and in Wisconsin. Campsites yielding Havana Ware and related pottery remains are affiliated with the Havana Tradition of the Middle Woodland Period of Illinois.
