In this study the lifeway of the Ioway Indians during the time they made northeastern Iowa their home is examined in historical perspective. The first section of this work deals with the Ioways as they were first observed by French explorers and traders in the 17th century, using historical documents--both written texts and maps--of that time. The second section then incorporates some of these observations with other ethnohistorical and archaeological data in a discussion of the Ioway lifeway in the early historic period. This work reveals the effects that the entry of French traders into the Ioway homeland had upon these Indians.
Several Oneota artifacts from the Clear Lake site in Tazewell County, Illinois, are described and the significance of these is developed by a short discussion of the late prehistory of the Illinois River valley.
