Title: Modern Methods in Iowa Archaeology
Synopsis:
Traditional methods of surface survey and excavation remain important
for archaeologists learning about the ancient past. Today, however,
archaeologists have added state-of-the-art methods that minimize damage
to sites and finds. This is particularly important in the case of sites
like ancient cemeteries which are protected by state law. This video
illustrates some of the modern methods used to locate and record archaeological
sites and identify and study recovered materials. Featured are aerial
photography, global positioning systems, geographical information systems,
magnetometer and resistivity survey, ground penetrating radar, and the
scanning electron microscope. Work at Plum Grove in Iowa City and Effigy
Mounds National Monument is featured. Photographs from other sites throughout
Iowa are also utilized. (Available in video or DVD).
