OSA ArcView Shapefile Tutorial

OSA SHAPEFILE'S ATTRIBUTE TABLE

ANATOMY
What An OSA Shapefile's Attribute Table Looks Like
Following is an example of an archaeological site shapefile Attribute Table (the OSA's standard version for all sites in the state of Iowa). This particular overall shapefile (containing multiple sites) is named: 13JH311_1980jun25_plus.shp while the Attribute Table reflects the contents of the dBase IV (i.e., .dbf) file named 13JH311_1980jun25_plus.dbf). In ArcView, this table has "Attributes of 13JH311_1980jun25_plus.dbf" labeled at the top of it.

13JH311 is Plum Grove in Iowa City; 13JH9998 and 13JH9999 are hypothetical sites (the old and new OSA locations) used as examples.
Refer to "Values Into Tables" to enter values into ArcView tables.

FORMAT
Format Of An OSA Site Shapefile
An OSA shapefile's attribute table consists of the standard 2-column ArcView attribute table plus 8 additional fields which are formatted as follows. If you download and use the copy_osa shapefile, you will not need to format a table to submit shapefiles to the OSA (see creating a shapefile).
