Application Form

The summer application will be available after summer registration begins (April 19, 2010). You must be registered for your summer classes before submitting the summer application to the Office of Student Financial Aid.

If your enrollment changes after you have been awarded, you need to complete a revised summer application.

After you are awarded a Parent PLUS for summer, your parent must complete a Request for PLUS (Parent) Loan form to accept the loan.

Summer Financial Aid

Summer financial aid is usually limited to Federal Pell Grant, Federal Work Study and Federal Direct Loans.

For financial aid purposes, the 2010 summer session is considered the final term of the 2009-2010 award year. Therefore, to apply for 2010 summer financial aid, you must have the 2009-2010 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and other required documents on file in the Office of Student Financial Aid. If you already submitted the 2009-2010 FAFSA and other required documents to be awarded 2009-2010 academic year aid, do not resubmit these documents.

A separate summer financial aid application is required. The summer application will be available after summer registration begins (April 19, 2010). Students must be registered for all summer courses prior to submitting the summer application.

If your enrollment hours change after you have been awarded, you will need to submit a revised summer application prior to financial aid being disbursed or receiving any Work-Study payment.

The Federal Pell Grant is awarded automatically to all eligible students, even if they do not submit a summer application.

The summer cost of attendance and expected family contribution are calculated based on the information supplied on the summer application. Cost of attendance for summer includes actual tuition and fees based on the registered hours of enrollment, estimated book costs, and living expenses (room and board, personal and transportation expenses) associated with the number of weeks of actual enrollment.

The University of Iowa’s financial aid year includes the following terms: fall, winter, spring, and summer.  Summer is the last term of the year. If a student has already been awarded their annual Federal Direct Stafford Loan maximum for the fall, winter and spring terms, we do not award loans for the summer session. (Annual maximum loan amounts are listed on our Federal Direct Subsidized Stafford Loan and Federal Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loan web pages.)

Dependent undergraduate students would always be eligible for the Federal Direct (parent) PLUS.  After you are awarded a Parent PLUS for summer, your parent must complete a Request for PLUS (parent) Loan form to accept the loan.

Graduate/professional students would always be eligible for the Federal Direct (graduate/professional) PLUS.

Approximately two weeks after submitting their summer application, eligible students are mailed an award letter informing them of their summer aid eligibility.
