Application Form

The winter application must be completed after you have registered for your winter classes.

Winter Financial Aid

Winter financial aid is usually limited to Federal Pell Grant and Federal Direct Loans.

A separate winter financial aid application is required. Students must be registered for winter courses prior to submitting the winter application.

The Federal Pell Grant is awarded automatically to all eligible students, even if they do not submit a winter application.

The University of Iowa’s financial aid year includes the following terms: fall, winter, spring, and summer. Because the winter term falls in the middle of the year between fall and spring semesters, most students already have an academic year financial aid package that covers living expenses for the winter session.  Thus most students cost of attendance for winter will only include expenses for tuition, fees, and books. The winter cost of attendance and expected family contribution are calculated based on the information supplied on the winter application.

If a student has already been awarded their annual Federal Direct Stafford Loan maximum for the fall and spring semesters, we do not award loans for the winter session. (Annual maximum loan amounts are listed on our Federal Direct Subsidized Stafford Loan and Federal Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loan web pages.) Upon special request from the student, we can adjust spring aid to allow for packaging of winter aid.

Dependent undergraduate students would always be eligible for the Federal Direct (parent) PLUS and graduate/professional students would always be eligible for the Federal Direct (graduate/professional) PLUS.

Eligible students are mailed an award letter that details their winter aid eligibility.
