What is Learning Assistance?

The Learning Coordinator (LC) provides academic support and instructional resources to Support Service Programs’ students and tutors.

What support and resources are provided for students?

The LC provides study skills assessment and instruction. Many first-year students find that the study habits and skills they practiced in secondary school are inadequate for college level courses. In order to help students identify learning and study skill areas that need attention, the LC administers the LASSI, a 15-20 minute web-based learning skills inventory that measures functioning in the following areas: attitude, motivation, time management, anxiety, concentration, information processing, selecting main ideas, use of support techniques and materials, self-testing, and test strategies.

Upon completion of the inventory, the LC recommends a course of action based on the results. The following are common study skill recommendations:

The LC and the study skills tutors are very well versed in the art of studying, learning, and teaching, as well specific areas of study. If you want to improve academically, simply come to New Dimensions in Learning, 310 Calvin Hall, or call 335-1288.
