The Learning Coordinator (LC) provides academic support and instructional resources to Support Service Programs’ students and tutors.

What support and resources are provided for students?

The LC provides study skills assessment and instruction. Many first-year students find that the study habits and skills they practiced in secondary school are inadequate for college level courses. In order to help students identify learning and study skill areas that need attention, the LC administers the LASSI, a 15-20 minute web-based learning skills inventory that measures functioning in the following areas: attitude, motivation, time management, anxiety, concentration, information processing, selecting main ideas, use of support techniques and materials, self-testing, and test strategies.

Upon completion of the inventory, the LC recommends a course of action based on the results. The following are common study skill recommendations:

• Short-term one-on-one instruction with the LC to develop or fine-tune a learning skill area.
• Tutorial sessions with an assigned tutor.
• Referrals to other University of Iowa student service offices.
• Other services for students:
• Learning resources (see Resource Collection).
• Learning and Study Skill Workshops.

The Learning Coordinator offers assistance and support for program tutors in the following ways:

• Providing tutors with resources (see Resource Collection).

• Familiarizing tutors with teaching and learning strategies and techniques, research on effective tutoring and training, and technology to enhance tutoring and learning.

The LC and the study skills tutors are very well versed in the art of studying, learning, and teaching, as well specific areas of study.
