Study Skills

In order to graduate from the University of Iowa, you will need average to above average proficiency in the following learning and study strategies:

• Attitude
• Motivation
• Time Management
• Coping With Anxiety
• Concentration
• Information Processing
• Selecting Main Ideas
• Study Aids
• Self-Testing
• Test-Taking Strategies

For a profile of your proficiency level in each of the above, please contact the Learning Coordinator (LC) and make an appointment to complete The Learning And Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI). The online inventory itself takes 15 — 20 minutes to complete and it is designed to measure use of effective learning and study strategies. Plan on spending an additional 10-15 minutes in consultation with the LC to design an action plan based on your scores.

Sample action plans based on the inventory results:

• Short-term instruction on time management with the LC or a tutor.
• Working through study skills activities individually, or with a tutor or the LC.
• Reading a book or a section of a book from the resource collection on a particular study skill.
• A referral to the University Counseling Service for short- or long-term work on persistent difficulties with attitude, motivation, or anxiety that may be preventing you from performing well in college.
