Position Description for Tutor

BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Tutor individuals or small groups of students, helping them to become more independent, confident and self-directed learners. Flexible scheduling from 5-15 hours per week at a rate of at least $7.00 per hour to start. There is a rate differential for group tutoring.

Tutors are usually needed for chemistry, physics, astronomy, math, statistics, computer science, engineering, biology, business, biochemistry, earth sciences, literature, foreign languages, philosophy, psychology and other social sciences.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Attend new-tutor orientation, training sessions and other scheduled meetings. Tutors will participate in approximately 15 hours of paid training each year.

2. Maintain frequent communication with Tutor Coordinator and Academic Planning Counselors.

3. Be prepared and "on time" for all scheduled tutoring appointments. Submit session reports within one week of each tutorial session.

4. Respond to staff requests and assigned students in a timely fashion -- within three days.

5. Recognize and respond appropriately to the needs of diverse students. Make referrals to or consult with program staff immediately when there is a problem.

6. Visit classes or consult with professors as necessary to stay current with course expectations.

7. Maintain an active personal e-mail account which will be used for communications with New Dimensions’ staff. (A free University of Iowa e-mail account is available to enrolled students and is recommended for this purpose.)

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Supervision is received from Tutor Coordinator and Academic Planning Counselors.

QUALIFICATIONS

Tutors must be able to relate to and communicate effectively with a wide variety of people. Also demonstrate patience, empathy, and a willingness to try new approaches to learning. A cumulative GPA of "B" and a "B" minimum in courses tutored and approval from faculty are required. Employment is limited to students enrolled at The University of Iowa, with emphasis on those who are undergraduates.
