UI conference, film screenings focus on French filmmaker Godard

The University of Iowa will host an international conference, "Reading Godard: Intertextuality and the Film and Video Work of Jean-Luc Godard," April 5-7 in the Becker Communication Studies Building (BCSB). The conference includes a number of film screenings, and all conference sessions and screenings are free and open to the public.

Jean-Luc Godard is the most allusive of filmmakers, and this conference will seek to closely investigate and elucidate some of his major intertextual sources said Chris Babey, one of the conference organizers. Speakers from four countries will present on a variety of topics ranging from various instantiations of written and visual discourse to the recurring use of the human body as an overarching compositional strategy in his work.

Vivid 35 mm prints of rarely seen or recently restored features will be screened during the conference. The recently restruck print of Godard's classic "Band Of Outsiders" (1964) will be shown Friday, April 5 at 7 p.m. in 101 BCSB, and the recently re-released "Follow Your Right" (1987) will be presented Sunday, April 7 at 7 p.m., also in 101 BCSB.

The rare and important 35mm short, "Letter To Freddy Buache," will be screened at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 5 in 101 BCSB together with an archival Beta SP of Godard's most recent video piece "The Old Place" (2000), a documentary on New York's Museum of Modern Art.

A videotheque presentation of further rarely seen video pieces brought by the UI directly from France and Switzerland will be shown twice in 101 BCSB, first on Thursday, April 4 at 7:30 p.m. and again on Sunday, April 7 at 3:30 p.m.
