UI Medical Student Makes Residency Match
(Student name), a fourth-year student in the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine and a native of (hometown), will begin a (specialty) residency at (program) in (city, state).
Medical residencies provide medical school graduates with advanced training in their chosen specialties. Many of the students, surrounded by family and friends, learned of their appointments at the annual "Match Day" ceremony held March 18 at the college.
Of this year's graduating class of 131 students, 68 chose primary care specialties, which include family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics and obstetrics and gynecology. Within primary care specialties, 21 students matched in family medicine programs, 23 in internal medicine, 12 in pediatrics and 10 in obstetrics and gynecology.
The top non-primary care specialties had eight matches each in anesthesiology and orthopaedic surgery and seven matches each in emergency medicine, pathology and diagnostic radiology.
Forty-four of the students will stay in Iowa for their first-year of post-graduate training. Of those 44 students, 31 will begin residencies at UI Hospitals and Clinics. Geographically, the most popular states among the students following Iowa were Wisconsin (10 students), and California, Illinois and Minnesota (8 students each).
