UI Officials Issue New Statement To Parents, Students

Dear Parents and Students:

As many of you are aware, Iowa City was struck by tornado on Thursday evening, April 13, 2006. We write to you to reassure you that the campus is doing well and to let you know how much we are looking forward to having you join us at the University of Iowa in the Fall.

We are very fortunate that the campus has been spared from almost all of the damage and classes have resumed as of today, Monday April 17. The only campus buildings that sustained serious damage were our Motor Pool building, which was demolished, and the Cambus barn, which was damaged but will be repaired. There were a few broken windows elsewhere, and we are inspecting roofs for hail damage. Still, our classrooms, residence halls, libraries, laboratories, and other facilities escaped unscathed and are fully functional. Recovery and clean-up efforts are underway in the sections of Iowa City that did incur storm damage and students affected by it are being offered assistance by the University and community agencies. Already, substantial progress has been made. It is a sign of the tremendous community spirit that is so characteristic of the City and University -- the spirit that makes this a very unique and special place to live and study.

While the recovery efforts will likely continue for several weeks, Iowa City is already returning to the vibrant, thriving community that it has always been. We look forward to seeing you here in the Fall and introducing you to the many offerings of the community and University.
