Statement issued Sept. 24, 2001 by Phil Jones, Vice President for Student Services and Dean of Students

In the wake of the national tragedy, the University and leaders from our wider community have asked all members of the community to remember that one of our collective core values is to offer a supportive and humane environment in which people from a wide variety of backgrounds and traditions may encounter each other in a spirit of cooperation, openness and respect for difference and diversity.

We hope that all members of the community will be guided by that spirit. However, it is also important to know that the University Policy on Human Rights and the Code of Student Life have sanctions for violations of that spirit.

In accordance with the University Policy on Human Rights "….in no aspect of its programs shall there be differences in treatment of persons because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, sexual orientation, gender identification and any other classification that deprives a person of consideration as an individual…"

The general conduct regulations of the Code of Student Life prohibit "assaulting, threatening, physically, abusing, unduly harassing, or endangering in any other manner the health or safety of any person on campus or at any University sponsored or supervised function or event." Violations of University policy may lead to criminal penalties by the courts and/or disciplinary sanctions by the University.

Alleged violations of the Human Rights Policy and/or the Code of Student Life should be reported to:
