How you can help
Blood Donations Still Needed. America's Blood Centers today said the blood supply in New York City is at capacity and new shipments are not needed. However, ABC stressed that blood will be needed over the next few weeks and months. It asks donors nationwide to call to schedule appointments for in the next two to eight weeks to avoid future blood shortages. Also, New Jersey government officials are urging hospitals collecting blood to shift to a "sustain and maintain" strategy. "The rush of emergency donations is raising concerns that blood inventories in the coming days and weeks may suffer. Hospitals are urged to stagger collections and pace the blood supply." While current need has abated there will be a critical need in the days ahead. At the DeGowin Blood Center, scheduled donor appointments are being kept and walk-in donors are being accepted as availability permits. Other interested donors are encouraged to make an appointment by calling the DeGowin Blood Center at 356-2058.
