| UI Announces New Security
Practices For Oakdale Hall, Hygienic Lab University of Iowa
employees working in Oakdale Hall and the UI Hygienic Laboratory,
which is located in Oakdale Hall, will be required to wear identification
badges beginning Nov. 8. The badges are part of new security
practices that will be implemented based on recommendations
from federal and state government officials because of heightened
concerns about biological agents being used by terrorists. (Full

Online: The UI Printing Department has made available
for Internet download a poster that tells people how to tell
if a letter or package is suspicious. The Adobe Acrobat file

Sites Offers Resources For Helping Children Cope: The College
of Education has prepared a web site containing links to topics
and information about helping children cope with the aftermath
of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. This site was designed to
serve as a resource for educators, school counselors and psychologists,
school administrators, mental health providers, and parents.

Guides Available For Coping With Trauma/Terrorism:
- When A Terrorist Act
Occurs: The September
11, 2001 terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center, in
Washington, D.C., and across the country are affecting people
worldwide. An act of terrorism makes all of us fear for
our safety and the safety of our children. It can shake
our feelings of security and leave us feeling vulnerable.
Here are some ways to find support and to help your child
and the people you love in the hours and days ahead. (Read

- Coping With A Critical
Incident: If
you have recently experienced a critical incident, you may
be feeling a number of emotions. You may be feeling sad,
upset, afraid, angry, or alone. You may have trouble concentrating,
or feel overwhelmed by your emotions. All of these feelings
are normal reactions to traumatic events. Whats important
to remember at this difficult time is that there are steps
you can take to seek support for yourself and find help.

Office of Affirmative
Action Website. The Office of Affirmative Action has developed
a
website outlining its services which can aid The University
of Iowa community following the
tragic events of Sept. 11. People who have suffered mistreatment
or discriminatory acts in the
aftermath of the Sept. 11 events are encouraged to contact the
Office of Affirmative Action.
Staff members are available to investigate formal or informal
complaints, consult
confidentially about discrimination concerns, or provide educational
resources to assist in the
creation of respectful, inclusive environments.

Response and Resources Site. The Office of International
Programs has established a web site that lists university
activities related to the Sept. 11 attacks on the U.S., as
well as helpful informational and educational resources. The

of Liberal Arts and Sciences has also set up a Web site dedicated

Stress Counseling. In addition
to being prepared for implementing our Emergency Preparedness
Plan, members of the Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD)
team comprised of chaplains, social workers, and psychiatric
nurses, are available for stress counseling. Call 356-2325
to talk with a CISD team member. In addition, UI Behavioral
Health therapists are available to meet with groups or individuals
as needed. Call 356-1348 for more information. Faculty and
Staff Services/UI Employee Assistance Program staff are available
for individual and group stress debriefing as needed. Please
