University of Iowa News Services is a department within University Relations. The UNS staff -- in concert with Health Science Relations and Art Center Relations, men's and women's sports information and the UI Hospitals and Clinics' Joint Office for Marketing and Communication -- reports on news for all of the University of Iowa colleges, departments, programs and special events, generating news releases that are distributed to local, state and national media outlets. It also: • Maintains a Web site with up-to-the-minute news about the university and a searchable archive of university news • Distributes a UI News Digest via e-mail to more than 2,800 subscribers both on and off campus, providing summaries of and links to news releases and national news stories that mention the UI • Monitors print, TV and radio news about the university, summaries of which are posted on the UNS Web site and in the UI News Digest • Arranges news conferences • Prepares media plans • Produces specialty publications and news products, such as the 2004 caucus and election experts guide • Provides media counsel to UI faculty, staff and administrators • Provides points of contact for media seeking expert sources Media or UI faculty and staff interested in learning more about how UNS can assist them can contact the office in several ways. UNS welcomes any suggestions for possible news releases. The news should be primarily about The University of Iowa. Events should be open to the public, generally, and your information should be submitted to our office for consideration at least two weeks before the events are scheduled.
Media training is available for UI administrators, faculty, staff and student leaders who may be asked by the news media to comment on university-related issues or to otherwise represent the university's interests in a public setting.
