New teaching and research labsThe newly renovated teaching and laboratory space for microbiology in the Bowen Science Building opened in late June. The opening comes after three years and $5.5 million of construction to improve infrastructure in microbiology. Completed in 1973, the Bowen Science Building (BSB) houses the college's basic science departments of anatomy, biochemistry, microbiology, pharmacology, and physiology and biophysics. In 1993, teaching laboratories were moved from BSB to new space in the Medical Education Building. "Before the renovation, departmental space for teaching and research was cramped and the cabinetry had badly deteriorated," says Michael Apicella, professor and head of microbiology. "The improved space has allowed our research space and funding as well as graduate and undergraduate programs to grow." The Department of Microbiology enrolls more than 1,000 students in its graduate, medical microbiology, health sciences, and undergraduate teaching programs. |
