![]() To better facilitate the College’s drug development and manufacturing capabilities, two of its service divisions—the Division of Pharmaceutical Service and the Center for Advanced Drug Development (CADD)—have merged to form The University of Iowa Pharmaceuticals (UIP). Mickey Wells, director of Pharmaceutical Service, leads UIP. He has more than 17 years experience in pharmaceutical development, most recently with GlaxoSmithKline prior to joining the UI last January. Alta Botha, director of CADD, serves as scientific director of UIP. Merging the two divisions formalizes what was already occurring on a practical level. The University of Iowa Pharmaceuticals will have a new website coming in early 2009. The Division of Pharmaceutical Service at the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy is the most experienced university-affiliated drug manufacturing facility registered with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The division has been producing clinical supplies in compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices since 1974. The facility is the only one of its kind to offer the range and scope of services needed by commercial clients. Its staff works closely with clients to produce virtually every type of pharmaceutical dosage form. A variety of large and small pharmaceutical firms from around the world use the manufacturing facility to produce supplies of new pharmaceutical agents for use in clinical trials.
