Into Print | Winter 2004

Historical printing studio taking shape at MBSB

Photos by Kristin Baum

Reliance press The Center for the Book has moved this 200-year-old Reliance press, left, to the Mossman building from its previous location in North Hall. The press resembles the one which Benjamin Franklin used, but is smaller. The Reliance and the Linotype, "the two great legacy technologies in printing," says Libraries conservator Gary Frost, will form the core equipment for the historic printing studio.

THIS IS GRAND: one student's response, below, to the December Linotype tutorial at the Printing Department.

molten printers' metal
The Linotype typesetting machine melts and holds about 30 pounds of printers' metal in a built-in pot. It releases small amounts of the metal to be cast into a line of type, the part of the process that gave rise to the machine's name. The bar at the top of the photo is pressing the metal as it is released into a mold.

lines of type
These lines of type, called slugs, were set during one of the Linotype tutorials. The Center for the Book plans more tutorials and classes.
