Provost Releases Report of Diversity Action CommitteeUniversity of Iowa Executive Vice President and Provost Michael J. Hogan released the report of an ad hoc task force that has investigated how the University can better integrate diversity into all aspects of its mission. Hogan appointed the Diversity Action Committee last spring, charging it to suggest specific steps the University can take to achieve the diversity goals outlined in the University’s 2005-2010 strategic plan, The Iowa Promise, and to develop performance indicators by which to measure progress toward those goals. Recommendations in the report include strategies for broadening faculty, staff, and alumni involvement in recruiting a diverse student body; creating a more welcoming climate by enhancing diversity training and increasing cultural awareness; and better coordinating and monitoring the University’s diversity efforts. Other recommendations include restructuring the University’s financial aid program to better support minority recruitment efforts, and revitalizing the University’s cultural houses. The Committee’s full report may be found online in pdf format at http://www.uiowa.edu/~provost/docs/DACreport.pdf. “I want to commend the Diversity Action Committee for creating such a collaborative process, and collecting such broad input from across the campus,” Hogan said. “In order for us to achieve real progress, every part of the University must embrace diversity as a key part of its mission. I think the Committee’s process and report reflect that imperative.” Hogan said that the process of broad-based input must not end with the release of the Committee’s report. “I encourage the entire University community to review the report and share their reactions with me,” he said. “A continuing campus dialog will be vital as I consider how best to act on the Committee’s recommendations.” The Diversity Action Committee was co-chaired by President Emeritus Willard (Sandy) Boyd, Interim Associate Provost for Diversity Marcella David, and College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Executive Associate Dean Raúl Curto.
