In 1992, the Office of the Provost established a program to enhance collegiate efforts to recruit and retain faculty from underrepresented communities, with an emphasis on recruiting faculty of color. This program, now called the Faculty Diversity Opportunities Program (FDOP), is administered by the Associate Provost for Diversity, who works closely with collegiate deans. This program has been an important tool toward reaching the University’s diversity goals. As noted in the Iowa Promise: The 2005-2010 Strategic Plan, increasing the diversity of the faculty, staff and students promotes the excellence of the University of Iowa. Each allocation from this pool—up to $40,000 to help support the hiring of a new, underrepresented, minority, tenure-track faculty member—will be recurring, and will stay with the hiring college as long as the faculty member hired through the program remains at the university. Further details about the FDOP Program are available upon request. Faculty Diversity Opportunity Program Policy (19k pdf)
