Programs for Elementary Students

Opportunity at Iowa is always looking for ways to connect elementary age students with The University of Iowa.

Pen Pal Project - The Pen Pal Program is an early contact program where University of Iowa faculty, staff, and students write letters to, and visit elementary-aged children through out the academic year.

Programs for Middle School Students

While most students begin preparing for college in high school, studies have shown that many students can benefit a great deal from earlier college-related experiences and exposure. Towards this end, Opportunity at Iowa supports two programs for middle school students.

Jacobson Entrepreneurship Academy - The Jacobson Entrepreneurship Academy is a week-long day camp for Iowa middle school students interested in entrepreneurship and owning a business.

All-State Music Camp - The All-State Music Camp (ASMC) offers students musical training and experience beyond that available in their home schools, including group instruction, master classes, and classroom instruction in most phases of vocal and instrumental music.

College Prep Guide

Preparations for college are beginning to occur earlier and earlier in a student's academic career. From financial considerations to areas of study to academic preperation, late-elementary and middle school can be the right time to start thinking about and planning for college.

The University of Iowa Office of Admissions offers a short College Prep guide for students considering college and Iowa.

Information for Parents

Considering college for your child is a daunting prospect for any parent, even those who've gone to college or sent older kids to college already. It's hard to imagine them on their own and away from home. At the same time, though, it seems like just yesterday they were falling asleep in their oatmeal—the time between now and high school graduation will probably go by just as quickly.

Support from parents can prove a critical factor in a student's collegiate success. Opportunity at Iowa and The University of Iowa offer several resources to help parents with the planning and transition for college:
