Retention
The goal of Opportunity at Iowa is to see that every Advantage Iowa scholar makes their way through their college experience to receive at least an undergraduate degree. Many Advantage Iowa Scholars go on to receive additional Master's, Ph.D., and professional degrees.
Towards this end, OI staff undertake a number of activities to help Advantage Iowa Scholars stay on-track academically.
Mid-Term Progress Review All Advantage Iowa Scholars are contacted near the middle of each term and asked to schedule an appointment to discuss their academic progress. Discussion at these meetings ranges from specific difficulties to planning for the following semester.
For students doing well in their course work, this is an opportunity to look to new challenges, directions, and opportunities.
For students having trouble academically, it's an opportunity for the student to work with the OI staff to locate resources to help them through the issue.
Tutoring & Academic Support
Advantage Iowa Scholars are encouraged to take advantage of the University's tutoring and supplemental course opportunities. Later in their undergraduate career, Advantage Iowa scholars are encouraged to become tutors themselves.
For information about tutoring and other academic support options, please contact Nancy Humbles (335-2092). Connecting with University-wide Opportunities The University of Iowa is a big place, and there are lots of programs and services that can be of great value to a student, but which can remain hidden. OI staff members are always keeping an eye out for matches between Advantage Iowa Scholars and the wide range of services available to students.
If you're interested in finding an opportunity in a specific area, please contact Nancy Humbles (335-2092). She may know of a program, student, or faculty member that's a perfect fit for you. Creating New Support Programs The secret to OI's success in retention is in the innovations made by OI staff. New programs and opportunities are constantly being developed with assistance from OI staff. If you have an idea for a new program—either a service you would use, or else a program you'd like to contribute to, please contact Nancy Humbles (335-2092). |
