I’d like to welcome both new and returning parents and students to The University of Iowa. As current Parents Association board president and a member of the board for 13 years, I still remember and appreciate the anxieties that go along with being first-time parents. I remember today’s crisis telephone call becoming tomorrow’s vague memory. For that reason and many others, there is a parent support organization for all parents/guardians of University of Iowa students.
The Parents Association has an on-campus contact available through the Office of the Vice President for Student Services who can follow up on questions or concerns you might have and help make referrals for assistance to the appropriate resources. Please visit our web site at www.uiowa.edu/~parent to contact the on-campus liaison and for the names of current parents serving on the board, as well as for direct links to various departments and services for you and your student. You also can reach the on-campus liaison at (319) 335-3557. Just talking with another parent who has experienced some of the same situations can also be helpful. Through private gifts from parents to the University of Iowa Foundation on behalf of the Parents Association for the Parent Fund for Student Support, allocations have been made this year to support a number of programs and projects on campus. Among those are an additional emergency phone near Mayflower Residence Hall, Family Weekend Tailgate sponsorship, student programs including Iowa After Dark, Weeks of Welcome, and the $10,000 Hour Show, and mailing new student handbooks to parents unable to attend the UI Orientation programs. In addition, I am very pleased to announce a gift of $100,000, pledged over five years, for the reception area in the Admission Visitor Center in the new Pomerantz Center. This facility is scheduled to open in 2005 and will be a comprehensive facility that will provide a breadth of academic, career, and recruiting resources for prospective and current students and alumni. Best wishes for a successful year, and go Hawks!! Darlene Schaller, Interim President UI Parents Association
