On Jan. 23, 2006, students who live in the residence halls will receive information on how to reapply for housing for the 2006-07 academic year. This information, which will be sent to the students’ campus addresses, will explain how students may reapply electronically and charge the $70 advance payment ($50 advance payment and $20 nonrefundable application processing fee) to their next University bill.
Parents, please note... The article on this page is the only notification that parents will receive about their students’ residence hall contract reapplication. Under the rules of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, we may not contact parents directly, as the student is the legal contract holder. However, parents may go to http://housing.uiowa.edu to look at housing information and to find the answers to many questions. Parents who are interested in monthly updates on residence hall-related information and deadlines may also sign up for an e-mail newsletter. They may access the reapplication booklet on the web or pick up a hard copy at the Housing Office, 17 Burge. The booklet includes:
- the terms and conditions of the housing contract;
- the application/contract signature card (or electronic reapplication);
- and important information on the self-assignment process, space changes, and cancellation.
The deadline to apply electronically or return the application/contract signature card and $70 is 5 p.m., Feb. 7, 2006.
If the student chooses to reapply on paper, the signature card and $70 should be returned to the Housing Office.
Priority for room assignment is random, based on the number of credit hours the student will have by May 2006. When students return the card and fee, they will be entered into the self-assignment system, and they will be sent a letter giving them their access time and date, which will be between Feb. 28 and March 8.
If possible, students will be tentatively reassigned to their current room. If they want to remain in that room, they simply confirm that choice and select a meal plan. If students want to choose another room, they may search by specific room number or by room type and building for an available space. Current residents who want to room together may enter the SAS system at the later of the assigned access times and search for an empty room.
Once the student confirms a room selection and meal plan, the assignment will be displayed. Students may access the system as frequently as they wish after their appointed time and until 5 p.m., April 14, 2006, to search for a different room or to change the meal plan.
Students will be required to have one of the following meal plans:
- Traditional 20 meals per week (excluding Sunday evening)
- Any 14 meals per week
- Any 10 meals per week
- Any 5 meals per week (This option is available only to residents of Mayflower, Parklawn, and rooms with a University-supplied kitchen.)
Each plan includes $200 in Hawkeye Dollars per year ($100 per semester). Hawkeye Dollars may be used at either Burge or Hillcrest Market Places, Mayflower and Hillcrest C-Stores, all Iowa Memorial Union food service areas, and food carts throughout campus.
When students reapply, the rates for the 2006-07 academic year will not have been approved by the Board of Regents, State of Iowa; therefore, proposed rates will be displayed in the self-assignment system.
The deadline for choosing and confirming a room assignment will be 5 p.m., April 14, 2006. If the student has not confirmed a room by that time, the application will be canceled, the $50 advance payment will be refunded, and the student will not be housed for the 2006-07 academic year.
Throughout the self-assigning process, the Housing Office will be happy to answer questions and help students use the system. The system was designed to be similar to registering for classes, so students would be familiar with the process.
