The University kicked off the new year with an old tradition this fall: a Several administrators and students, including UI president Sally Mason, addressed a crowd of 4,500 on the west side of Old Capitol, offering new students an official welcome into the Hawkeye family. The Aug. 23 event ended with the singing of “The Iowa Fight Song” and a procession to the president’s residence for a block party with free food and live entertainment. The convocation and block party were part of the University’s annual Welcome Week festivities, which also included a carnival, a student organization fair, and film screenings.
