The University of Iowa

A letter from Parents Association President Susan Beck Bates

Springing Forward

Greetings to each of you from the Parents Association Advisory Board. There is nothing better than the arrival of spring at the University of Iowa campus and all the promise it brings. Students, faculty, and staff seem energized, and the campus is ablaze with blooming trees, green grass, and more. It’s great to be a Hawkeye!

We’d like to congratulate graduating seniors and all of the families who have supported their academic efforts. We know their years at The University of Iowa have prepared them well for a bright future, and we offer them our best wishes.

As the parent of an Iowa alum and two current students, I want to encourage parents to remind their students to make use of the Pomerantz Career Center for guidance, career information, and interview skills. Semester’s end is a good time to reassess education and career goals and objectives.

Creating “whole students” is a challenge The University of Iowa takes to heart. Education, social consciousness, and healthy habits are just some of essential components. As part of this challenge, the University opened in 2004 the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex, a phenomenal fitness and recreation center on the west side of campus. This coming fall, the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center will open on the east side of campus. These two facilities and the many programs they will house ensure the greatest opportunity for our students to be healthy and productive now and in the future. More info about recreation facilities is available at www.recserv.uiowa.edu.

Be sure to mark the weekend of Oct. 22–24 on your calendar for the next Family Weekend, which is always filled with enjoyable activities ranging from a pregame brunch to entertainment and, of course, Hawkeye football. Make it a memorable weekend with your student, and start by making those hotel reservations now. [See Lodging Infomation for Visitors.]

I also want to remind you that the Parents Association exists to serve the needs of parents of UI undergraduate students and that every parent of a current undergraduate automatically is a member. Please feel free to contact any of the members of the Parents Association Advisory Board, or to contact the on-campus liaison, Belinda Marner, at parents-association@uiowa.edu or 319-335-3557. We welcome input as well as new members to the advisory board.

We wish all members of the Hawkeye family a happy and healthy summer with your students.

On Iowa! Go Hawks!

Susan Beck Bates (BA ’77)

21-only update: You may be aware that as we go to press the Iowa City City Council will be voting on an ordinance to limit access to bars for those under the legal drinking age of 21. The Parents Association Advisory Board is in support of this measure and submitted a letter to the council. The letter is available online at www.uiowa.edu/~parent. If you are interested in contacting the city council or following this issue, visit the city council’s web site at www.icgov.org/default/?id=1114.
