Letter from the
Parents Association president

For those of you new to campus, the Parents Association Advisory Board welcomes you and your student to the University of Iowa family. Your student should be settling into life as a college student by the time you receive this newsletter. No doubt the last few weeks have been a time of adjustment for both you and your student. And to those of you returning for a new year, welcome back!

Please take this opportunity to keep open the lines of communication with your student, whether he or she is a first-year student or a senior. Talk about the tough issues, but also just “check in” with your student. Encourage use of on-campus resources such as University Counseling Service and instructors’ office hours. So many students (mine included) think they will be bothering their instructor, RA, or advisor if they ask a question or send an e-mail. As I still tell my children, the worst they can say is, “I’ll get back to you.” And then it is the student’s obligation to follow up. It’s a learning experience for child and parent!

Keep up-to-date on University news through online sources such as the Daily Iowan,, or University News Services, These are great ways to stay current with campus life and trigger conversations with your student.

Family Weekend is a wonderful University of Iowa tradition, which this year will be held Oct. 22–24. The weekend includes a game day breakfast, a Sunday Dance Marathon breakfast, and other activities. Please join us! For information, see

This issue of Parent Times is chock-full of interesting stories and photos. The Parents Association board took a tour in late April of the new Campus Recreation and Wellness Center, a facility that will provide students with a multitude of healthy lifestyle options. Also, note the interview with Jerrod Koon, director of the Men’s Anti-Violence Council; this organization provides campuswide information and training sessions that ultimately benefit the entire UI community.

Please visit us online at or contact our on-campus liaison Belinda Marner at or 319-335-3557. Let us know how we can help you and your student.

On, Iowa! Go, Hawks!
